History of Character Counts in the Barrington Area

In the wake of the Columbine tragedy, Healthier Communities of Barrington studied ways to support a safer community in the Barrington area. In parallel with the District 220 Safety Committee recommendations regarding the need for character education, Healthier Communities helped to form a subcommittee called Character Counts in the Barrington Area. Since the first Character Counts Community Awareness Workshop in March 2000, we have sponsored 12 training workshops and events in the Barrington Area.

Our programs have included:

  • Community Awareness Workshops on the National CHARACTER COUNTS! Program, 2000 - 2001
  • Educator Inservice programs for CUSD 220
  • Educator Inservice programs for CUSD 220 and other local schools, 2000 - present
  • Barrington Area Six Pillar Awards 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006
  • Civility Workshops by Susan Slater, industrial psychologist – 2002
  • Implemented "Codes of Conduct" for Barrington Youth Baseball and Softball - 2002
  • 'Bring a Friend' Community Luncheon … May 2002
  • Anti-Bullying Book Study and Workshop Proposal – 2003 - 2004
  • Chamber of Commerce Members' Sponsorship Program, 2003 - present
  • National Radio Interview on Character Counts in the Barrington Area– July 2003
  • Full day CUSD220 teacher / staff / food service / bus personnel inservice and evening parent program presented by Barbara Coloroso, educator, lecturer, and author of The Bully, The Bullied and The Bystander - February 7, 2005
  • A Community-Wide Approach to Stop Bullying ... Barbara Coloroso presented anti-bullying workshops to 3rd through 12th grade CUSD220 students and 8th grade St. Anne students. She also held two evening presentations to the community - Nov. 14, 15, 16, 2005
  • Participation in Barrington 4th of July Parades, Crop Walk, and Sidewalk Days, 2000 - present
  • National Night Out 2006
